With many island and coastal communities depending on polluting energy sources, our tidal power solutions empower those communities to better protect their coastlines and their livelihoods. By harnessing the power of moving water, we offer a clean alternative
Sustainable Marine is a leading provider of coastal and nearshore renewable energy solutions. Our aim is to power island and coastal communities, and energise the blue economy using sustainable forms of energy generation.
We have developed an innovative and unique floating tidal energy platform, PLAT-I, which provides a clean and sustainable energy alternative to diesel or coal for coastal communities. We offer complete turnkey solutions for tidal energy projects, including design, build, operation, and maintenance services.
Our company's expertise also includes novel anchors and mooring systems for high energy environments through its Swift Anchors division, which offers a broad portfolio of competitive solutions for use across the marine sector. These solutions provide substantial carbon and cost savings, and rapid deployment using the company’s specially developed underwater installation tools.
To power island and coastal communities, and energize the blue economy using renewable and sustainable energy.
To be one of the worlds leading providers of coastal and nearshore renewable energy solutions.
Undersea currents is one of the oldest forms of energy generation known to man and have been harnessed for their energy since 787 AD. Tidal power is non-polluting, reliable and predictable. In these times of increased energy demand, dwindling natural resources and the climate change debate, the need for clean, alternate forms of energy has never been more important.
We design, build, maintain and operate our systems to provide a completely integrated energy solution. Our tidal power systems are more dependable and easily maintained than our competitors. They’re resilient, reliable, modular and accessible all year-round, and because they don’t require special infrastructure, can be deployed in remote communities with local boats and equipment. The ebb and flow of the business of tidal energy globally and locally has conditioned us to be tough, nimble and flexible.
The company was founded in 2012 in the UK to develop moored tidal energy platforms that substantially reduce the cost and risks associated with deploying and operating instream tidal energy systems. In 2018, the company merged with SCHOTTEL’s tidal energy business unit, becoming a fully integrated systems provider, incorporating the powertrain and control systems developed in Germany by SCHOTTEL HYDRO, with automation and power conditioning systems being supplied by SIEMENS.
Working with some of the top researchers and universities around the world in tidal power, we have extensive engineering, production, marine operations, project development and business operations expertise. We have the ability to deliver complex technology and site development projects from concept through to successful execution. Having demonstrated the ability to identify, evaluate and secure project sites, our site evaluations, that have been performed in the UK, Canada, and the Philippines have led to several successful demonstration projects.
We have recently been focusing our efforts in Grand Passage, in Nova Scotia, Canada, where our PLAT-I 4.63 (280kW) floating tidal energy platform has been undergoing long term testing since 2018. This has proven the power output that can be achieved, its resilience in adverse weather conditions, and enables the performance of environmental monitoring. The PLAT-I 4.63 was previously tested in Connel, Scotland prior to being re-deployed to Grand Passage. This continued developmental work has been performed in preparation for the Pempa’q In-stream Tidal Energy Project at the Fundy Ocean Research Centre for Energy (FORCE).
We value the health of marine environments and are committed to the reliable collection of environmental data to provide valuable information regarding the interaction of in-stream tidal energy devices and their surrounding environment.
Sustainable Marine is headquartered in Edinburgh, Scotland, with offices in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia, Canada, and Spay, Germany.
